🚀 If this is your first time using Interactive Brokers
- Open your account on the Interactive Brokers website: sign-up has several steps (details, experience and identity check) and can take a few days to be approved.
- Download the IBKR Mobile app (or TWS for your computer) and log in with your username and password. The first time it will ask you to turn on two-factor authentication.
- Turn on the simulated account (paper trading) in your account settings: it has its own username and is ideal for practising.
- Add money by bank transfer, following the instructions under «Transfer & Pay» → «Transfer Funds».
- Do a full test on the demo: buy a small quantity with its SL, raise it to your entry price and close it, following the steps below. When you can do it without hesitating, move to the real account.
Initial setup
- Check in your account settings that you have permission to trade US stocks.
- To see NASDAQ prices in real time you need the US market data subscription; without it, prices are delayed.
- Create a watchlist with the stocks. You can trade from the IBKR Mobile app or from TWS on your computer.
🟢 BUY
- Find the stock and tap «Buy».
- Enter the number of shares and the «Market» order type.
- Add the SL to the same order: in TWS, right-click the order → «Attach» → «Stop Loss»; in the app, under «Attached order», tap «Attach order» and choose «Stop Loss». Enter the signal's SL price.
- Submit the order: two are created, the buy and the stop order.
🔵 RAISE SL
- In «Orders», open the stop order for that stock and modify it.
- Set your entry price as the stop price and submit it.
🔴 CLOSE
- Sell the position: from the portfolio, «Close position», or with a market sell order.
- Go to «Orders» and cancel the stop order if it's still open.
Important: if the stop order is still live after you close, it could sell shares you no longer have and open a short position. Always check there are no pending orders left.
